Artist Residency Program in Athens, Greece

athens, Greece

Accepting Applications for 2019-2020

our mission: an artistic community

In the heart of Athens

Athena Standards Residency was born of the idea that the city of Athens offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience simultaneously the vibrant urban culture of a contemporary city and the rich history of an ancient cosmopolitan center.

My time at Athena Standards Residency was an eye-opening, supportive, & beautiful experience that caters to the upmost creativity for its residents.

The program:

Studio Space
& Professional Development

The residency program provides the artists with large, open format studio spaces in a repurposed commercial building with abundant natural light. We’ve also organized professional development throughout, including studio visits, cultural events around Athens and workshops. It is our mission to allow for the exchange of ideas and to provide for the opportunity to form lasting professional relationships with international colleagues.

Set in an open-format studio space in one of Athens’ most dynamic & diverse neighborhoods, I was able to engage in a truly experimental studio practice exploring the creation of natural dyes from local markets as well as working with large-scale photographic practices inspired by 20th century Greek cinema.

The process:

& Funding

The Athena Standards Residency is open eleven months out of the year (we are closed in August), with residency periods of one month or more. We are currently accepting applications for all 2019- 2020 sessions, on a rolling basis. As an artist run organization, we strive to keep a balance between quality and cost. It is important to us to be able to offer the quality of studio space and the scope of professional development and opportunities that we do. The cost of the residency program is €1500 for one month, and €2850 for two months.

rolling deadline

We open all sessions within the year to applications, and reviews of applicants are conducted on a monthly basis. Early application is encouraged; early applicants have a greater opportunity to select their studio of choice, as well as their preferred months.

stay longer, experience more

We encourage artists to consider staying more than one month in order to gain a deeper understanding of Athens as a cultural hub. For 2019-2020, we are offering 10% off the second month and 20% off the third consecutive month.

explore the city

The residency program provides the artists with studio space and shared housing with other residency artists. We also provide a monthly Metro Card and recommendations for exploring Athens, including gallery openings, museum shows and events of interest.

make it count

As an artist run residency we offer the amenities that we know artists want; top notch studio spaces, one-on-one professional development, and an artistic community and contacts that will carry into the future. All at a cost that an emerging artist can afford.

A Cultural Hub

documenta 14 put the city of Athens on the map of the contemporary art scene, and as a result there has been an influx of art practitioners to Athens. The city continues to be an artistic hub, welcoming people from all over the world, who have found new ground to express their ideas. We look forward to holding a retrospective exhibition of past artists-in-residence to correspond with the upcoming Eleusis 2021.

Living & working in Athens was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The city of Athens is unique, inspiring, & complex and the vivacity for life, art, & history across the landscape of the city makes it incomparable to anywhere else in Europe.
