Athens is an old city with beautiful architecture, which serves as a rich historical and cultural backdrop to the modern life of the city. I think photographing the people who function in that experience of two worlds colliding is fascinating.
Hatnim Lee is a Korean-American documentary filmmaker and photographer based in NYC. Her main focus is photographing people, which has led her to document extreme religious groups around the world. She is interested in how old traditions are still current in our world today, and enjoys the juxtaposition of the old and the new, two things we may not normally think of together. She believes this happens often in our lives and goes unnoticed, but when seen in photography, there is a clear distinction. Hatnim participated in the July 2019 residency session at Athena Standards. Her work can be found online on her website and instagram.
